The Hellenic Center for Bioarchaeology was founded in 2022 by Dr. Eleanna Prevedorou (archaeologist/bioarchaeologist), who also serves as the Executive Director.
The Hellenic Center for Bioarchaeology is a scientific, non-profit organization for the study, preservation, and promotion of human skeletal remains from ancient and modern contexts, as well as for the protection of our skeletal heritage.
Osteological remains resulting from excavations and other archaeological research settings constitute movable monuments. As such, they are subject to the Greek legislation for the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage, in general.
The main objectives of the EL.KE.VI. mission are:
- The osteological analysis of human skeletal remains, including excavation, conservation, storage, documentation, sampling, laboratory analysis, exhibition, and publication.
- The interdisciplinary study in the fields of biological, forensic, and dental anthropology, bioarchaeology, funerary and environmental archaeology, cemetery studies, ethnography, human skeletal anatomy, paleopathology, biogeochemistry, archaeogenetics, etc.
- Education and training in all aspects of human skeletal studies, including human osteology, bioarchaeology, and forensic anthropology (e.g., seminars and workshops, formal courses at different levels).
- The creation of modern skeletal and dental reference collections and digital archives.
- The strengthening, dissemination, and promotion of bioarchaeology and human skeletal studies in Greece and internationally.
- The support of the work of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, the Ephorate of Antiquities, as well as other academic and research institutions in relevant subjects.
- The protection of Greek antiquities and the preservation of our cultural heritage, including osteological material.
- Raise awareness for the importance of human skeletal remains and their study in prehistoric, historic, and modern contexts.
